Chole (Version 1)

Today i am sharing the recipe of Chole. Punjabi’s make this often, this dish is an excellent source of proteins.Although Punjabi version of chole is different. Shall share that version soon.:) This dish is a favorite of my kiddo and makes a great side dish for rice and rotis.

Chole (1)


Chickpeas (Chana) : 1 cup

Onions chopped: 1

Garam masala/ Chole masala: 1 tsp

Red Chilli powder,corainder powder and turmeric powder: 1 tsp each

Salt to taste

Water: 1 cup or more

To grind:

Onion: 1 chopped roughly

Tomatoes: 2 chopped roughly

Ginger: 1 inch

Garlic/; 2-3 cloves

Saunf :1 tsp

Pepper corns: 5-6 balls

Coriander leaves: 2 tbsp


Soak the chana in water overnight. Pressure cook for 6-7 whistles and keep aside until further use.

Heat oil in a pan and add the “to grind” items. Saute until tomatoes turns mushy, cool and grind in a paste.Keep aside.

1.Heat oil, add the finely chopped onions and cook till translucent.

2. Add turmeric powder, chilli powder, corainder powder and saute for 2 minutes.

3. Add the grind ed onion tomato paste and cook till oil starts leaving sides.

4. Add the cooked chana,garam masala /chole masala,water and salt.Boil till desired consistency.

Serve Hot alongside roti/ rice.( I paired with Jeera Rice)
