Semiya Payasam

Here’s wishing you all a very Happy Karti. It’s mainly celebrated in South. This festival is celebrated in all Tamil homes as festival of lights. This also is celebrated to commemorate the relation between brother and sister like Bhai Dhuj.

Karti Adai is very special. Almost all the homes today make this delicacy. The post of Adai shall share soon.

Today the recipe i am sharing is that of Semiya Payasam (kheer). This can be made in a jiffy with minimum ingredients and is a sure shot hit.semiya payasam


Semiya Payasam
Milk (Full fat) : Half a litre
Semiya Roasted or Raw) : 1 tbsp
Sugar:3-4 tbsp
Ghee :1 tsp
Cardamom powder:a pinch
1.Take a heavy bottom pan and add 1 tbsp of sugar and let it caramelize for a minute on a medium/low flame.(Don’t worry even if it becomes very hard).
2.Add milk and start mixing with a spoon.Eventually the sugar will melt.
3.Reduce the milk to a quarter and then add the semiya and allow it to cook in a low flame for 5-7 minutes.
4.Add sugar it will loosen,keep stirring and cooking till it reduces to half.Add cardamom powder.
5.Heat ghee is a pan, and fry the cashews and raisins till golden brown and pulp.Add to the payasam.
Serve hot/cold. Tastes yum both the way.


Caramelizing the sugar would give a nice pink color to the payasam. You can skip the step and start with boiling milk and then adding sugar.
